Global Logistics Update: October 9, 2026

Client Alert Rachel Shames Craft CMS Tile Card

Following China’s Golden Week holiday, the Transpacific Eastbound trade remains steady, and rates persist at high levels. Port congestion, especially in North China, is still causing vessel berthing delays and major space constraints. Port omissions and blank sailings are keeping vessels full as well.

The outlook for the rest of the year is uncertain. The National Retail Federation reports that the retail peak for the year is likely behind us, though this does not factor in non-retail volumes like those fueling data center development and other infrastructure projects. Data center cargoes, for example, are expected to drive an especially strong air peak season during the last quarter of 2026. We expect that ocean carriers, as usual, will continue to push for bi-weekly increases and the realities of the market will determine if any stick.

In Europe, water levels on the Rhine River hit a new record low. Congestion and delays continue; rates from Europe to the US have been climbing, and vessel space is booked out on most services several weeks in advance.

At the Panama Canal, slightly better water-level conditions have allowed for an increase in daily vessel transits. However, the longer-term outlook still indicates that low water will be an issue into 2027.

On the US front, ports are mostly fluid, though rail delays persist, particularly via US West Coast ports. The Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach have reported skilled labor challenges due to heavy import volumes arriving the last few months. For now, vessel berthing and working times are normal, though truck turn times are increasing.

Truck capacity remains a challenge nationwide. On top of record-high fuel prices, tight capacity has driven rate increases across all truck modes.

Securing capacity early on all modes is highly recommended.
