Mike serves as President & CEO of CV International and Capes Shipping Agencies, a family-owned, global logistics and vessel agency service provider. He started working at CV International in 1996 in ocean freight documentation and, after working in various capacities within the organization, was named president in 2006. In 2018, he was named CEO. In his current capacity, Mike is responsible for the overall management, direction, and growth of the company.

Mike has served in leadership positions on multiple trade boards.  He currently serves as Chairman of the Virginia Maritime Association (VMA) and board member of the Hampton Roads Shipping Association. Mike previously served as 33rd President of the VMA and president of the Hampton Roads Global Commerce Council.

In 2019, Mike was appointed to the Commonwealth of Virginia Board for Branch Pilots; a board that oversees the licensing and regulation of harbor pilots in Virginia. In 2021 he was appointed by the Virginia Secretary of Transportation to the Virginia Freight Advisory Committee (VFAC) to the Virginia Department of Transportation. In June 2022, Mike was appointed by Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin to the Board of Commissioners of the Port of Virginia.

In 2015, Mike was recognized by the Hampton Roads Business Journal as a “Top 40 Under 40.” He has been recognized the last three years in a row in Virginia Business Magazine’s Power 500 as one of the most influential individuals in Virginia’s transportation industry.

Mike received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Richmond and his juris doctor from Louisiana State University where he was a member of the Louisiana Law Review. He is a licensed customs broker and is licensed to practice law in the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Michael King, CPA, serves as Chief Financial Officer for CVI and its subsidiary, Capes Shipping Agencies.  He is responsible for management of accounting and finance, administration, business development, human resources, and information technology.

Michael graduated from Christopher Newport University and is a licensed CPA within the Commonwealth of Virginia with over 25 years of accounting experience in public and private accounting. Before joining CVI, he was Chief Financial Officer of Marathon Development Group in Norfolk, VA.

Previously, he served as Treasurer of Pre-Mix Industries, a multi-state manufacturer of Quikrete products, headquartered in Chesapeake, VA. Michael received his public accounting experience with the firm that is today PB Mares.

Michael has been actively involved with Isle of Wight Academy for 25 years and currently serves as President of the Board. Michael is an avid Virginia Tech fan and resides in Battery Park, VA with his wife.

Lisa Cook
Vice President, Operations

Lisa serves as Vice President, Operations for CVI. She is responsible for leading and managing all aspects of CVI’s freight forwarding, NVOCC and customs brokerage operations, ensuring successful service delivery to clients, growth and profitability of all office locations.

After receiving her associate’s degree in Business from Gaston College in 1993, Lisa began her global logistics career with Globe Express Services as an Operations Specialist. Lisa has held various operations, business development and managerial roles. Her experience has included responsibility for domestic and global agency networks, including various information technology implementation initiatives, ISO certification, and corporate finance. Lisa is an expert in implementation and execution of broad logistics solutions, including ocean and air services, cargo, purchase order management and systems integration (EDI). She has extensive experience in international transportation, customs compliance, visibility and information services. More recently, Lisa served as the Director of Logistics with SeaCorp, with responsibilities including product development, systems enhancement, corporate compliance, pricing and sales development and support.

Lisa joined CVI in 2017 as Director of Operations with company-wide responsibility for service deployment, operational process development, key account management, as well as facilitation of electronic systems and supply chain visibility platforms to ensure service excellence.

Bill Smith

Bill Smith is a high-performance global logistics professional with a passion for driving third party logistics (3PL) sales and marketing efforts to deliver supply chain solutions.  He has over 25 years’ experience developing and executing international transportation models in a variety of industries including retail, apparel, furniture, footwear, hardware, chemicals, and industrial goods.  Throughout his career Bill has actively engaged these industries through guest speaking engagements, feature magazine articles and editorial commentary with various trade organizations and publications.  He also enjoys guest lecturing at various colleges in NC on global logistics.

Bill has diverse experience in international transportation, warehousing, distribution, and supply chain management.  A standout theme in Bill’s career is his product development work, particularly in the areas of technology enabled supply chain visibility, cargo management and 4PL solutions.  He continues to be a student of such industry best practices as shippers’ needs, consumer behavior and distribution channels evolve, creating new opportunities for 3PLs to add value.

Bill holds a B.S. in Business from Virginia Tech and a MBA from Babson College (magna cum laude).  Bill also completed post-graduate work at the The Logistics Institute at Georgia Tech.  He is an active board member of the Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals (Charlotte Roundtable) and the Specialized Furniture Carriers Association.

Rachel Shames
Vice President, Pricing and Procurement

Rachel serves as Vice President, Pricing and Procurement for CVI. Her responsibilities include management of the CVI transportation pricing team, vendor selection, contract management and negotiation, FMC compliance, and international agent network management.

Rachel began her career in international shipping with CMA-CGM America. She joined CVI in 2011, gaining experience in various departments with a focus on inside sales and marketing for the company. In 2014, Rachel assumed the role of Manager, Transportation, working on service procurement and development of client proposals. In 2018, Rachel was promoted Director of CVI’s Pricing & Procurement department before the growth of her role transitioned into the capacity of Vice President in 2022.

She is a member of the Virginia Maritime Association’s Future Leaders Program, the NVOCC Subcommittee of the National Brokers and Forwarders Association of America (NCBFAA), and a member of CONECT’s Ocean Committee. Rachel previously served on the board of the Hampton Roads Global Commerce Council for six years, including two years as Secretary. Rachel regularly contributes her expertise to industry publications and events, and authors Market Updates on behalf of CV International, Inc.

A native of Norfolk, Virginia, Rachel earned her bachelor’s degree from the University of Michigan in 2005. She holds a Master of Business Administration with a concentration in Maritime and Supply Chain Management from Old Dominion University.

Steve Hagen

Steve serves as Vice President and General Manager of Capes Shipping Agencies. He is responsible for the management, operations and commercial development of Capes Shipping Agencies.

Steve began his career in 1988 as a boarding agent for a Hampton Roads ship agency.  Since that time, he has held leadership positions with both local and multinational agencies, most recently managing of all east coast port operations for a multinational ship agency. He has spent the majority of his career in Hampton Roads and has also worked in the ports of New York, Philadelphia, Tampa and Oakland. He is a proud veteran, having served in the United States Navy prior to starting his career in the shipping industry.

Steve has made a career of planning and executing operational, bulk shipping and supply chain solutions utilizing all modes of transportation. He has a record of success in business development, creation of innovative client solutions, and he maintains extensive port related government agency and private sector relationships.

Steve is an active member of the Hampton Roads Coal Association, the Virginia Maritime Association, and has served on the Board of the Propeller Club, Port of Norfolk. His diverse experience, deep network of contacts, and passion for shipping compliments Capes’ tradition of professional service.

Kevin L. Briggs

Kevin serves as Director, Client & Administrative Services for CVI and its subsidiary, Capes Shipping Agencies. He is responsible for the operations and management of human resources, information technology, and other administrative functions.

Kevin attended Virginia Tech where he pursued a degree in computer science, and later attended Tidewater Community College where his studies focused on accounting & finance. Kevin has been a certified human resources professional since 2009, and currently holds the certification of SHRM Senior Certified Professional from the Society For Human Resource Management.

Prior to joining CV International, Inc., Kevin served 10 years as Vice President, Accounting for Capes Shipping Agencies. Previously, he served as Controller for Abacus of Hampton Roads.

Pete Hansen

Pete serves as Director of Operations of CVI sister company and Capes Shipping Agencies. He is responsible for all management of agency operations, systems, and staff development.

Pete began his career in 2006 as a boarding agent in the port of Hampton Roads. He has served in every capacity of vessel husbandry from general vessel agency to stevedoring and terminal operations, all while working in various locations throughout the US East and Gulf Coasts. Pete has extensive experience in process and systems analysis, business development, and implementation of proprietary and commercial operating systems.

Pete holds business certifications in Project Management, LEAN, Six Sigma, Microsoft Systems, Technology Integration, Commercial Shipping, OSHA and MSHA.

Pete is an active member of the Hampton Roads Coal Association, the Virginia Maritime Association, ASBA Young Professionals Association, and Maryland Coal Association.

Sam McClure
Director, Compliance and Customs Services

Sam serves as Director, Compliance and Customs Services for CVI. He serves as CVI’s corporate compliance officer and is responsible for overseeing all aspects of our Customs related services, including growth.

Sam started his career in 1977 with Waters Shipping Company in Charlotte, NC. He began as a document runner, soon becoming a leader in operations and customer service for the branch. Sam, along with Linda Masten, founded Central Carolina Shipping Inc. in 1983 as an independent Customs Brokerage firm where he served as Vice President for 26 years. Sam and Linda grew Central Carolina into a successful and highly respected member of the Carolinas trade community. When Charlotte opened their local chapter of the IFFCBA Sam was part of the organizing group and he headed the Customs committee for several years. Sam obtained his Customs Brokers License in 1984 and remained with Central Carolina until the company was acquired by CVI in 2009.

At CVI, Sam has held several positions in both the operations and sales departments. As an expert in U.S. Customs regulations, Sam is often called upon on to provide guidance to importers on Customs compliance issues. He makes regular presentations on matters related to importation and broader regulatory compliance.

Bobby Scott

Bobby serves as Director of Business Development of Capes Shipping Agencies. He is responsible for driving new business and ensuring current customer expectations are satisfied.

After graduating from The College of William and Mary in 1998, Bobby began his career as a boarding agent for a Hampton Roads based ship agency.  He rose through the ranks to eventually lead all U.S. East and Gulf Coast offices while focusing on operational efficiency, strategic planning, account management, and market analysis.

Bobby holds business certifications in Project Management and LEAN Six Sigma and has completed coursework in leadership development and vessel chartering.

Bobby currently serves as a committee chair of the Virginia Maritime Association and is an active member of the Hampton Roads Coal Association, the Propeller Club of Norfolk and the Association of Ship Brokers and Agents (ASBA).

B. Wayne Coleman

Wayne currently serves as Chairman of CV International, Inc. He started his career in the shipping industry in 1971 with a small, Norfolk, VA based freight forwarder, eventually moving on to a major vessel agency where he boarded vessels and worked closely with U. S. Customs, Immigration, the U.S. Coast Guard, and other government agencies on regulatory matters.

Wayne’s career took him to a major ocean carrier, where he progressed through ocean documentation, traffic, operations, and sales. In 1980 he rejoined the freight forwarder where his career started. In 1984 he opened his own business, Coleman International, today known as CV International (CVI).

From CVI’s early beginnings as a forwarder, Wayne has overseen the growth and expansion of the company by focusing on results oriented logistics solutions for customers. Under his leadership, the company has diversified from forwarding into customs brokerage, then transportation through its NVOCC and IATA air division, door-to-door cargo management, and eventually into vessel agency services with the acquisition of Capes Shipping.

Wayne received his bachelor of science in business administration from Old Dominion University and is a licensed customs broker.
