CVI & Capes Shipping Agencies: Fully Prepped Offshore Wind Services Providing you with a Local Edge
Explosive Growth for the East Coast
On August 17, 2020, Governor Ralph Northam signed the Virginia Clean Economy Act, setting the stage for over $15 billion of investment in the flourishing offshore wind sector off the Mid-Atlantic region. Dominion Power is leveraging its two-turbine Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind pilot project, 27 miles off Virginia Beach, as a launch pad to build the largest offshore wind farm in the U.S., with over 180 turbines planned by 2026.
More recently, the Governors of VA, MA and NC announced a three-state collaboration to advance offshore wind projects called the Southeast and Mid-Atlantic Regional Transformation Partnership for Offshore Wind Energy Resources (i.e. SMART-POWER). These states, along with NY, NJ, MA, CT, RI and ME lead the East Coast’s transition to renewable energy.
The U.S. Department of Energy estimates that the offshore wind project pipeline along the Atlantic coast will support 86,000 jobs, $57 billion in investments and provide up to $25 billion in economic output by 2030 (Virginia Business, 10/29/20).
The Challenge of New Industry Requirements
The preeminent offshore wind equipment manufacturers hail from Europe, where the industry was established over a decade ago. As these companies enter the U.S. market, they are finding a greenfield situation, with local resources lacking in specialized ports, infrastructure, and specific wind energy expertise. They are seeking to plug into networks that are ready to serve this growth sector, with local assets, boots on the ground, scalable services and focused insight that specialized vendors bring to the table.
